The Convoy of Hope Rolls into Kansas City Providing Some $1 Million in Goods and Services in a Single Day

In 2011 Jackson County's unemployment rate was 9.6%, a full point higher than the statewide rate of 8.6% the Missouri Department of Health reported. According to the United Community Services of Johnson County, the poverty rate in Jackson County grew 29% between 2000 and 2009. During that same period the number of poor in Kansas City increased by 65%.

In response to the alarming statistics, hundreds of Kansas City-area residents are preparing to welcome hurting neighbors at what they hope will become a community movement. Local businesses, churches, government agencies and nonprofits will partner with The Convoy of Hope, a community outreach event June 16 at Swope Park (Swope Parkway and Meyer Boulevard). This community event is one of dozens of stops along a 50-state, $50 million tour of hope and help for the 46 million Americans currently living in poverty—the largest number on record.*
